1. Up-gradation & Strengthening of QAU Phase-II Total cost: Rs. 485.457 Million Expenditure up till 30-6-2010

Introduction: Establishment and strengthening of educational institutions of higher learning in the field of engineering, Information Technology, basic and management sciences, etc is a component and in fact the cornerstone of Education Sector Reforms (ESR). The project of immense importance for the country in general and QAU in particular since it aims at provoking quality education through augmenting infrastructure and other academic facilities. Once completed the project will give a firm footing to QAU and would subsequently allow it to contribute more actively in providing quality education and promoting enquiry and research. Objectives:
  • To serve as permanent base to plan and conduct research at an advanced level in those areas where fast solution may be expected through the introduction of these physical facilities at the QAU campus.
  • To extend/offer advanced facilities in the above said Programs to the scientists for collaborative research.
  • To collaborate with public/private sector Universities in research for innovative projects, which will increase inter-science collaboration among the university and research establishments of the country, by becoming part of the education & research network.
  • To cooperate with organization within and outside Pakistan involved in similar and related research work.
  • To provide a national and international forum by organizing seminars and conferences for discussion in scientific and technological development leading to new ideas and innovative application of knowledge on production oriented activities.

2.Development and Study of Magnetic Nanostructures. Total cost: Rs. 132.639 Million Expenditure up till 30-6-2010

The Development and Study of Magnetic Nanostructures project follows the MOST vision and initiative to strengthen nanoscience and technology in Pakistan. This would be a research program meant to further strengthen the existing research facilities and PhD training program. Specifically this project will concentrate on the establishment of facilities for development of magnetic nanoparticles and structures and their systematic magnetic and electronic studies to identify suitable materials for electronic applications. The project would support PhD students both locally as well as internationally, the latter by incorporating them in the split PhD program. The project aims to develop expertise in this new area through strengthening our existing international collaborations and mutual working visits between Pakistani and US institutions. By employing Post doctoral researchers and PhD students the project would aim at the dev elopement of highly skilled manpower in the areas of nanotechnology, high vacuum, low temperatures and surface techniques. This project aims to integrate two very important and ongoing activities in the field of materials science viz. magnetism and nanomaterials. Nanomagnetism, the focus of our work, deals with developing nanosized magnets and relating their unique properties with their size and structure. This finds extensive applications in such varied areas as data storage, spintronics (current control through magnetic control), and biological and medicinal applications such as targeted drug delivery.

3. Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) Botanic Garden Total cost: Rs. 36.453 Million Expenditure up till 30-6-2010

Introduction: The primary mission of QAU botanic garden is to promote scientific education, public awareness and conservation by increasing the diversity of plants on campus in order to perpetuate and transform QAU campus as an outdoor resource of teaching. Plants are a vital part of the world’s biological diversity and an essential resource for human well being. In general the subcontinent holds a wide spectrum of climate and topography ranging from humid tropics to semi-arid and temperate to alpine climatic regions with tremendous plant diversity. Floral research in Pakistan reports 5, 700 species of flowering plants with almost 400 endemic species found in the northern and western mountains. A botanic garden is an institution that holds documented collection of living and preserved plants for the purpose of scientific research, conservation, display and education. Botanic gardens serve as repository of rare and economically important germplasm of indigenous and exotic flora. Objectives:
  • Exploration, collection and evaluation of economically important plants.
  • Development of ex situ germplasm collection.
  • Acquire ethnobotanical information regarding indigenous plants of potential value.
  • Disseminate medicinal plant knowledge to scientific and wider community (locals and farmers) to enhance drug discovery process.
  • Industrial liaison especially with pharmaceutical industry.
  • Provide teaching and research facilities to M.Sc., M. Phil and Ph.D. students in the Faculty of Biological Sciences.
