One-day Seminar in Honour of Dr. Rahman Held at Quaid-i-Azam University

A one-day seminar was held at Quaid-i-Azam University organized by the department of Linguistics on 25 April, 2014, to pay tribute to the famous Pakistani scholar, Tariq Rahman, who is going to be awarded D.Litt for his published work by a British University making everyone proud. Dr. Tariq Rahman was invited to give a lecture on Language Views of the South Asian Muslims and Nurturing of Modern Linguistics in Pakistan. In his lecture Dr. Rahman spoke on the relation of language and power ideologies in South Asia, revealed in the growing divide between Hindi and Urdu. He explained that modern linguistics was struggling to take roots in Pakistan despite difficulties and hardships. Amina Saiyid, Managing Director Oxford University Press Pakistan, highlighted the history of Dr. Rahman’s publications by OUP. She said that the most distinguishing feature of his work from other writers was that it combined intellect with wisdom, information with insight and analysis, and passion with cool and calm judgement. Dr. Mubina Talaat, in her vote of thanks showered lavish praise on Dr. Rahman’s literary and non-literary books. Prof. Aitezaz Ahmed, the Vice Chancellor of QU, appreciated the achievements of Dr. Rahman as researcher and academician, and presented a shield. The seminar ended after a long question-answer session. Students and teachers of the department of Linguistics from Quaid-iAzam University enthusiastically participated in the seminar.
