Society for Promotion of Science inaugurates at QAU

The inauguration ceremony of the ‘Society for Promotion of Science’ (SPS) was held at the Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU). Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ali, Vice Chancellor, Quaid-i-Azam University, in his message, congratulated Prof. Dr. Farhan Saif for launching the ‘Society for Promotion of Science’. He said QAU has always supported the activities to promote science. “I am hopeful that magnitude and diversity of the activities in the ‘Society for Promotion for Science’ shall grow with time,” said the Vice Chancellor.

While addressing the inaugural ceremony Prof. Dr. Farhan Saif, Department of Electronics, QAU explained the objectives of the Society. He said society shall be useful for young students, academicians, and for the general public. “From the platform of this society, we shall be able to launch scientific events where senior scientists could meet young researchers and students to communicate ideas and celebrate the achievements. At the same time we shall develop opportunities for our active researchers to utilize their experience and train young minds in teaching and research” he added.

Dr. Asghar Qadir (HI, SI), distinguished scientist of the country, mentioned that analytical thinking is necessary for the development of Pakistan. He said, “in the history of the world only those countries flourished that developed science, when they stop developing science they collapsed. Science is needed not because of immediate benefits, but because it leads to understanding which leads to the development of a country.”

DR. N.M. Butt (SI), prominent nuclear scientist, also addressed the audience. While appreciating the initiative he said, “establishment of ‘Society for Promotion of Science’ would play an active role in creation of the science culture in Pakistan.”

Dr. Shoaib Ahmad brought indigenously made telescopes, and displayed for the participants. He explained to the audience that how the Sun can be photographed by using solar filters. The participants and the young children enjoyed the hands-on activity with the telescopes. A large number of students and faculty members from different universities attended the ceremony.
