Distinction for Department of Chemistry,
Quaid-i-Azam University
Quaid-i-Azam University has the honor this year
to be the only research institution/university in Pakistan with
maximum participation in the Nobel Laureates Conference in Lindau,
Germany from Pakistan. Two Ph. D scholars from the Department of
Chemistry, Ms Faroha Liaqat and Ms Farhat Huma have been selected
as young researchers from Pakistan by the prestigious Lindau Council
for the 59th meeting of Nobel Laureates from June 28 to July 4,
2009. The Lindau meetings have been held since 1951 to ensure interaction
of Nobel Laureates with young researchers from over 67 countries.
The Lindau Nobel Laureates Meetings provide a globally recognized
forum for exchange of ideas related to recent research advances
in the areas of Chemistry, Physics, Medicine and Economics. This
year, 608 chemistry students have been selected from over 2000 world
applicants for the meeting on recent advances in the field of Chemistry.
Six students from Pakistan are also among the young researchers
selected by HEC and later by the Lindau council. Ms Faroha Liaqat,
a Ph. D student working on photovoltaic in the Department of Chemistry
has also been selected by the Nature Publishing Group for a short
documentary on climate change. This documentary will also highlight
the current research going on in the Department of Chemistry and
focus on key areas where environmental friendly changes can be introduced
to counter the adverse effect of technology on nature.
Profile of selected students
1. Ms Faroha Liaqat has been
the recipient of the Chancellor's Medal from the Quaid-i-Azam
University for holding first position in the Department of
Chemistry in M.Sc (2004-05) and M.Phil (2006-08). She has
also Roll of Honor from Punjab University and a French Language
Certificate from NUML to her credit. She has been the recipient
of the FBISE scholarship (1999-2001) and University Merit
scholarship for the year 2004-2008. Ms Liaqat is currently
pusrsuing research on photovoltaic with special emphasis on
dye sensitized solar cells.

2. Ms Farhat Huma has been the recipient
of a merit scholarship from HEC under the President Talent
Farming Scheme for session 1996-98 and from Quaid-i-Azam University
for securing 2nd position in the Department of Chemistry in
M. Sc as well as M.Phil. Ms Huma is currently carrying out
her Ph. D research on biocompatible polymeric coatings for
medical devices. |
